PPC is the paid for arm of Search Engine Marketing. Pay Per Click marketing involves advertising on search engines whereby the marketer places a text advertisement next to a page of relevant search engine results. The advert will have specifically targeted certain key phrases or words that had appear in the search query. They are often called 'Sponsored Search Results' or 'Sponsored Links'.
With Pay Per Click marketing, the position of the advertisement is based on a bidding system - the higher the bid, the higher the position. As a result, the more common the search, the higher the bidding is because it is more sought after. The bid is made for every time a user clicks onto your link, so the only cost you are paying for is when someone enters the advertised site.
What makes PPC marketing so effective is that you that you are specifically targeting the people you know are interested in your product or service - precious clicks (i.e. money) aren't going to waste.
Unfortunately, Pay Per Click marketing isn't as easy as striking a deal and then letting your advertisement work its magic, it's a marketing program that requires constant monitoring and careful strategising to be as effective as possible.
